TOWN MONUMENTS

 

HISTORICAL CENTER
The historical town center of Broumov, founded in the first half of the 13th century on a rock promontory, is the oldest monument of this town. It is characterized with a regular system of streets and a market place in a large square. Around the old town are ramparts and areas of uncultivated land. Parts of these defensive walls were near Strelnice (Range), a castle tower, which protected the entry gate and road to the suburb "Hladomorna" and on the west side of the town a tower was built in what is today the rectory house.


THE BURGHERS' HOUSES
The Burghers' Houses are from the time of the Middle Ages. In these houses there are cellars with Gothic style round vaults. The present appearance of the Burghers' Houses is from the 16th, 18th and 19th century. The largest Renaissance house No. 105 has an elaborate entry gate or door from 1595. The hallways of houses No.154 and No.155, which are in the lower part of the square built in the 1570s, have star shaped ceilings

OLD TOWN HALL
The Old Town Hall was the "BAILIFF HOUSE" in the middle of the 13th century. In 1419 it became a town hall and it is the oldest town hall of Bohemian towns. This building was rebuilt after being destroyed by fires in 1452 and 1566. It was rebuilt once more in 1839 and recent renovations to the building were made in 1994.

THE BENEDICTINE MONASTERY OF ST.WENCESLAS
The Benedictine Monastery of St. Wenceslas was built in the first half of the 14th century on the site of the former citadel. It was rebuilt after being destroyed by fires in 1559, 1664 and 1684. The Baroque era of 1728 -1738 gave the monastery its present day appearance when it was reconstructed after the drawings of K.I. Dientzenhofer. He designed the plans for the interior namely the prelacy, the refectory and the library. The interior decorations were made by famous artists of Prague's Baroque era - stuccos by B.Spinetti, frescos by K. Kovar and paintings by J.Hager and F. Scheffler. Currently in the monastery is a museum of the Broumov Area.

THE MONASTERY CHURCH OF ST. ADALBERT (VOJTECH)
The first written information on the monastery church of St. Adalbert dates back to 1357 when it was built in Gothic style with a double nave leading to a polygonal chancel, two towers- one with a clock and the smaller tower with a belfry on the north side of the chancel. The church was destroyed by fire and master builder Martin Allia rebuilt it in Baroque style in 1684 - 1694. The interior is the work of renowned Baroque artists- stuccos by Soldati, frescos by J.J. Steinfels and of sculptors M. Jaeckel and K.Hiernle. The altar paintings in its six lateral chapels made by V.V. Reiner.


DECANAL CHURCH OF STAINTS. PETER AND PAUL
The first reference of the Decanal Church of Sts. Peter and Paul was made in 1258. The church was stone built in the 14th century and it was rebuilt in Baroque style in1679- 1680. The tower was completed in 1682. The interior of the church was reconstructed after a fire in 1757. Inside the rampart wall, opposite the main entrance to the church there are graves with tombstones dating from the 16th and 17th century.

THE CHURCH OF ST. WENCESLAS
The Church of St. Wenceslas is situated near the Lower Tower, which was built on the lower part of the town. The church was built in 1729 from designs made by K.I. Dientzenhofer. F.A. Scheffler painted the ceiling fresco. The church was shut down towards the end of the 18th century and reopened in 1885 by Abbot J.N. Rotter.

THE HOSPITAL CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Hospital Church of The Holy Spirit is situated on the outskirts near the hospital. This church was first mentioned in the 14th century. Orginally it was a wooden church, it was rebuilt in 1450 and in 1689 it was reconstructed in stones.

THE CEMETERY CHURCH OF ST MARY
The Cemetery Church Of St. Mary was founded in the 13th century. It was rebuilt in 1459 after it was burnt down by the Hussites. Abbot Tomas Satoria built a gallery around the church towards the end of the 17th century. In the gallery there are Renaissance and Empire style tombstones and also on display are chronicles of historical events.
